I'm having starter drama's again,(probably bad earth again) and a thought crossed my mind can a datsun 1000 starter be used on a standard 948 engine and gearbox setup

I can't help you with the Datsun starter but I know the Mini guys fit a Gemini starter motor.
Is the Datsun 1000 starter pre-engaged like the later Datsuns ?

I will have to look whether enaged or not, I have found a triumph site where they are using an isuzu trooper(holden Jackaroo) starter with an adapter plate - I think the triumphs are B series engines though, don't know if there is a difference with lucas starters http://www.teglerizer.com/triumphstuff/73gt6br_tropperstarter.htm

The Trooper is the Jackaroo out here & they use the same basic engine as the Gemini (G200/G160 ?).
I don't think Triumph have ever used a B series engine.
The later Midgets went from A series to a Triumph donk.

The Dato 1000 starter is a solenoid type starter not a bendex spring type.
It looks like the early 1200 starter with a band like dust clamp around the end, over the brushes

I really don't know why you're having dramas with such a simple starter motor.
Years ago, before I had spares, I ran my Morry with one brush removed from the starter motor. It effectively ran at 1/2 speed but this was still enough to start the motor everytime.

I can confirm that 1000/1200/120y etc. starters are interchangeable with each other if anyone ever needs to know. Won't really help your current problem unfortunately.
I can't recall any triumphs using anything other than triumph/standard/vanguard motors except for the TR8.
Maybe that gemini swap would work on a minor, but I don't know anyone who has tried.

yes I checked the starter on the bench last night, all works fine, it must be a high resistance again on the starter, last time I ran a seperate earth lead from the battery, I think our high humidity and months of rain don't help

Are you still using the original solenoid on the firewall ?
The problem wouldn't be there, would it ?
Voltage drop across solenoid terminals, drop across earths.....?
(I'm sure you've checked all that side of it anyway)

jumpered straight from battery to starter with jumper leads = very hot lead ie high resistance

I bit the bullet because of the drama's I've had and cause my stock of starters are all 50yrs old and bought a hi torque starter http://www.enginecentre.com.au/starters.html wow ! the start time is now in nanoseconds, you literally just touch the pull switch and the engine is running, I've never had that in any of my morries before
