Just a small question - while I'm crawling around under the gearbox. I have not yet re-fitted the earthing strap to the gearbox. I have one end bolted to the crossmember that supports the box - where does the other end go? Just to any bolt on the box itself? And what exactly is this meant to do? There is no current running through the box...??

David electricty needs a path from the battery and back to the battery
( either way positive or negative to earth).
When you pull the starter the motor takes power via the heavy cable.
As the engine is sitting on rubber mounts it needs the gearbox earth strap to return to the battery.
Hope this is clear .??
Make sure your strap has a clean connection no paint or grease.
While your under there make sure you fit the engine steady cable to the rear of the gearbox

Cheers John thanks!

So do I just attach one end to the crossmember and the other end to one of the bolts on the gearbox?

As regards the steady cable my car was not fitted with this - My car is number 201151 and this cable wasn't fitted until car number 264013. Consequently my crossmember doesn't have the hole in it for the cable. I also don't have the engine steady rod fitted to later cars.

Mine is attached to a rear gearbox bolt and to one bolt on the crossmember.
Incidently
I had a Morris Ute with a broken earth strap and the return when starting was via the choke cable sure let some sparks out at the dash as it was not real tight
