hi all,

got round to fixing my speedo cable today, just replaced it with an old one i had in the shed.. (the inner cable was broken... can this be replaced, and shorted?)

however the speedo still does not read the correct speed...

it has 1525 written on it which i think is tpm.?

it works fine the whole way through the range, however it is about 50% of what it should be reading...

the question is, can i adjust it? what do the two screws on the back of the speedo do? ie. is there a way to loosen the spring?? i just dont want to go fiddling to much as i dont want more problems...

thanks

Jake

I have had speedos recalibrated after changing diffs, tyres wheels etc.
Instrument repairs shops will do it .The last one I had done was from Sydney. Manly Instrument Repairs.
They need you to give them the numder of cable turns per meter.
This is how I did mine.
1 Remove speedo cable bring out under dash where you can see it.
2 Cable is square on the end make one face with white paint.
3 Put a marker on the ground center of front wheel
4 Mark out exactly 20 meters put another marker.
5 Drive car from one marker to the other and count turns.
6 Provide repair shop numbers of turns per meter.

otto instruments of evans rd salisbury is a well know repairer and calibrater. the 1534 should relate to the number of cable turns to a certain speed

If it was the original speedo, clean it all and put it back together and try again. Always worth a try, then take it to Otto. Not sure why you need to give him your measurements though, unless he makes suits as well Shocked Shocked Shocked Embarassed Eye Rolls

I used to run a pushbike speedo cost $50 and you can calibrate it yourself, mount under dash or in glovebox, these days I have a GPS tells me the speed etc, and I can set it to warn me if I go over a set speed, I use it in all the cars I drive, never look at the speedo anymore

For a while now, I have struggled with the idea of paying upwards of $400 (a new / used speedo out of a mini moke and then recalibration at Manly) to change my speedo from miles to kilometers.

I had little white and black stickers on the glass to tell me where the 60, 80, 100klms positions were. I got the position of the speeds by the GPS. This was acceptable but looked awful. But I do remember when we changed from miles to kilometers, so many years ago, I brought the stickers to tell me how fast I was going back then.

So, as I am a bit tight with money, I thought why not do it again.

I got a few measurements and a few different colours to try and match the speedo face. I also tried to match the font.

and this is what I got.

from this

I disassembled the speedo and used very thin double sided tape to stick the custom made speedo into position. It was a bit tricking to try and get it under the needle and I mucked it up a little. It is about 2klms per hour out. But hey you cannot really see it when you are sitting in the drivers seat.

It is still a bit untidy, when you look close, butit will grow on me.

Regards
Kel

This is what I did with mine (black face speedo). I had a spare and was not working with my original gold face, so I went a bit fearless. It works and is quite accurate, but might not work with yours. (ie a speedo reading low) You might completely stuff the speedo by doing this. All care, no responsibility etc.

Ok, disclaimers aside...

Mine was reading about 10mph high, so I took the unit apart, and re-connected the inner bit with the speedo mechanism to the speedo cable in the car. Driving at a set speed, confirmed by two GPS units, I noted how much the speedo was reading high. I then turned the needle on the spindle back by the same amount as it was reading high.

To do this, I needed to hold the spindle very carefully with fine pliers and push back (anti-clockwise) the needle. I guess that this created more tension on the tiny watch coil spring, resulting in a lower reading. In your case I guess you'd need to go the other way, but this assumes that there is enough tension in the coil spring to begin with to allow for a fairly substantial relieving of tension to allow a doubling of the reading (if that makes sense!)

Before you start moving needles and stuff, check that everything else is ok, and that nothing is rubbing or draging. 50% low is a long way to be out. A bit of lube might go a long way.

Like I say, requires patience and risk.

Very smooth Kel. After I put the 1000 gearbox in my SII I changed nothing else ie original speedo. I checked it against the GPS and it now reads Km/h more or less. The only trouble is that occasionally I'm a bit heavy with the right foot and I run out of numbers particularly going downhill with a tailwind (it already had a 1000 motor in it). just gotta change to a quieter diff.

Thank you Monk,
Mine is far from perfect but it saved my hip pocket and it is pretty close to the original smith design apart from the white furry edges of the poor cutting tool that I used. Eye Rolls

May work for some and may not for others.
