if you hook them up to your existing blinker circuit (i gather you have blinkers on your car) your traficator will flap up and down wildly when you put your indicator on. this is most probably the reason they were disconnected.
you can test if they work quite easily by running 12V across it, you can hook it up to your, or a 12V battery, if it flings out at you and the light goes on... it works
there is a way(me thinks) of getting them to stick out while your indicators are on, but it will involve a little more work than just hooking them back up. i havnt tried this, but might attempt it in the future, after my tail light project.
but if you can tap into the indicator circuit before the flasher unit (this will involve having 2 flasher units) for the traficators. it would allow the traficators to work normally, whilst your blinkers are flashing

Check out this thread for detailed info, but it might be a bit more than you want to begin with.

Before you go messing about with the wiring, I'd suggest removing the trafficators and bench testing them. It'll be easier to give them a good clean while they're out. It's quite easy to remove them, just remove the trim panel and the two screws that hold the units in place.

I don't think they're affected by -ve earth. Mine work fine on positive.

When I bought the car I got told the only reason they had unhooked the trafficators is 'cause people drove too close to the car and side swipe them off. So I hope that mains they are were wired right. Ahhh it's all so confusing lol

well you could always just hook them up and see if they work right, if they flap up and down, it could get a little annoying, and possibly damaging to the traficators

Hi Precious,
There is a way of having both indicators and semaphores working from the original indicator switch. You will need 2 flasher cans though.
Basically what you need to do is first wire up the semaphores to the switch as normal. Then with the cable you have going to the left semaphore you attach a 3 pin flasher can. Then connect earth and the other cable goes directly to your indicator lights on the front and back. Then do the same for the right side.
If you only want to use a two terminal flasher can, you just delete the earth.
When you do that you can make it even better by separating the semaphore bulb wiring from the solinoid wiring and you connect the semaphore bulb wiring to you indicator wiring.
What you then have is flashing indicator at the front and back and in the semaphores but the semaphores just stay out when the indicators are on.
Of coarse you will have to put fuses in the circuit to protect it but thats easy.
I can supply you a diagram if you wish, depending on which way you want to go.

just found this flasher unit which has a pin for each side of the car.
the part number is 68261BL, 7 pin, standard for a 626(~1991-97), has pins for:
-ve
+ve
hazard
left (switch)
left (lights)
right (switch)
left (lights)
http://www.narva.com.au/products/browse/heavy-duty-electronic
this would make sure that either side of the car flashes at the same rate (which can be a problem using 2 flasher units, even if they are the same) also, has hazard (also at the same rate) so it might be worth a look
