Must be those crazy Morris Down Under Admin Team that like giving people avatars. I didn't put mine up and it magically appeared.

Cheers,

Yeah, those bloody MDU admins.

Look what they gave me. I might be a little plump but I don't wear a funny overcoat and I have a beard and hair with a straight part!

Very funny!!
I always thought the MDU Admin was a cut above
but I'm beginning to wonder... I kinda liked the other avatar, too! Please can I have it back? Obviously I wasn't gracious, grovelling and grateful enough.

Oh, so droll!
A little gratuitous career advice, always supposing you have one, don't give up your day job for a job in comedy, unless of course it's fall-down comedy. And learn to spell! Now let's get back to poor Dazle's thread! The poor blighter's had it high-jacked (sorry, mate, there's no helping these admins)

I thought that it was a very good (albeit, young) likeness

Actually an uncanny likeness to someone who I once worked with. But I prefer the friar - not the fryer!! Shocked

Thanks Les, fun and games, sorry Dazle, it's all yours once again, sorry to borrow your thread.

Hi All,

Well managed to pull the generator appart and this is what I found. Seems the grinding noise was the ammerture.

It looks as though the main ammerture has rubbed on the feild wiring holder, also I have noticed that the bearing that supports the ammerture is not in the centre doesn't look standard. This bearing movess quite a bit inside the bearing cup. I have to drill out the rivets to check the bearing itself.

Now for the questions.

The above post, I seen that the bearing cup is not in place. I am thinking of changing the bearing out does the cup need to be there with new modern bearings? Is there any test procedures that can be used to test the field wires and the ammerture? Also I am not sure if I require a new backing plate not sure if it has been chewed out.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. I am still mulling over whether to convert to alternator, but figured it is easier to replace a bearing that rewire and convert to alternator.

Cheers,
Jason

After closer inspection it would seem that the bearing plate has shifted making the bearing look off centre, there is still a fair bit of slop on the bearing so will drill out the rivets and check it out.

Thanks,
Jason

As you can see the top right hand corner the bearing can move 1mm easily. Which is not good.

Cheers,
Jason

Hi Jace, could you pack it with something to stop it from moving? My Dad was a motor mechanic and often used a thin sheet of something which was gold in colour and could be cut with scissors. The name of it escapes me at the moment. Repco or one of then could probably advise you. Good luck with it.

Hi Dazle,

That is exactly what I have done. I just found some shim sheets and have used that. I am just waiting for the Loctite to dry and then I can reassemble. I will also be checking out the ammerture .

Cheers,
Jason

That's the name I was trying to think of shim sheets. Not sure how one checks the armature. I suppose if it doesn't work you can always get it re-wound. Good luck with it.

Cheers

Hi Stolzie,

You need someone that has an armature growler to check it. Given that some auto elecs will tell you it is cheaper to buy a new generator or convert it to alternator, it may be hard to find one. A crusty old auto elec shop may have one AND, more importantly, someone that knows how to use it.
I think your Freeway one is the same, you could christmas tree that.........

Cheers, Paul

Thanks Paul, yeah I have seen the armature growler in work on you tube! University Motors is the channel. Like you said it is only a matter of finding an auto elec that has one and knows how to use it.

I think I may have a spare on my shelf for the freeway, but I am not sure on the size I will have to check it over and I am also not sure what condition it actually is in, as it had been sitting in the boot.

As for lighting things like christmas trees, I have been busy trying to add new school to the Morrie. LED indicators and tail lights.

I have done this as I was informed that they were hard to see. I haven't tested during day light but they are a touch brighter and have a more crisper light compared to the older bulb. I will be also mounting some in the rear window.

Hopefully I can get all this working before the Wolseley National Meet in Ipswich which is only two weeks away.

Cheers,
Jason

Hi Stolzie,

That armature has definitely been poling (hitting the field keepers/windings,) and they may be damaged as well. Not sure how successful any repair to the bearing housing would be, so may be worth looking for a decent s/H one.

Not sure if you got what I meant by Christmas tree-ing, I meant to pinch parts off one for the other Very Happy, sometimes known as cannibalizing.

I have rebuilt a few of those in my past life in the Army, they were fitted to Land rover 2A amongst others.

Cheers, Paul

PS: Plenty of piccies for the Wolseley Forum please

Hi Guys,

Well after a somewhat frustrating weekend attacking this bearing problem. I did as Paul suggested and Christmas tree'ed some older generators I had in my shed.

I pulled the ammerture and pulley setup out of another generator(labeled austin a40 12V C22XXX?) and chucked that into my existing setup outer field wires and shroud. I checked the A40 ammerture with the C40 and it is the same length and fitted without a hassle. Fitted it all back up and it seems to work.

One slight problem I did notice that the IGN light is very very dim on idle and disappears with slight revs. This will have to do until I can find a suitable replacement but at least I may be able to make it to the Wolseley Rally and yes Paul, I will be posting lots of pics on the Wolseley Forum.

Anyway will be burning the midnight oil this week to get everything else organised.

Cheers,
Jason

Hi Jason that is how it should work as at idle it isn't providing enough power to charge the battery but at as soon as you rev the light goes out as the charge is greater than the draw
