I have a grinding type noise on starting. 1954 Series 2.

Noise is not engine speed related.

Was told it could be solenoid sticking and starter motor not disengaging?

Pull starter returns OK, seems to have strong spring.

Is the solenoid the two terminal unit on the bulkhead with the starter button in the centre?

Could this be the problem?

If all the bolts are nice and tight what is the next step?

Can the unit be serviced?

Comments welcome........................

Keith

Hi. The unit you refer to is the starter connection. The cable pulls in a disc the size of a 20cent coin it makes contact across the two terminals.
Each time it connects it sparks and wears away. You could try another second hand one or fit a new one as they are available from UK.
The other problem could be the bendix spring which fly's out to engage the flywheel when the starter turns, sometimes it gets dirty and simply needs a clean and perhaps some light lubrication. Just remove and clean with petrol.

These Pull start switches do suffer from worn out contacts from time to time. Most times caused by the starter motor being worn and drawing too much current. Always a good thing to check the starter Bushes and brushes for wear when starting becomes a bit sluggish. A starter with worn Brushes that gets ignored will end up with heavy arking on the commutator bars which will then need a new armature fitted. And these armatures are becoming hard to find and expensive to buy.

Glad you mentioned that

Do you know where I can get the bush and brushes. Pulled it apart a few months back and she is getting a bit ordinary so best to do it now rather than latter
