Hi all,

does anyone out there know if the alternator brackets from an early 70's mini will enable me to fit a BOSCH alternator? and what car should I be getting the alternator from (I think there are a couple of different mount types for Bosch)

I think someone on here mentioned an XD foulcan as a car to get one off

If anyone has a piccie of a Bosch on a morrie (std motor) it would be appreciated. I will worry about the mounting first, then sort the wiring

Cheers, Paul

a lucas alternator was fitted to the mokes and mini
you may have to make up your own top through bolts to suit the alternator the bottom adjuster bracket might be alright

Bought second hand Alternator from Newcastle Mini Dismantlers $50.00
ask them for rear bracket ( no charge).
I fitted L bracket from hardware store to it. and put coil back in original postion.
Also stripped out regulator and left on, wires are joined behind.
Result. Still looks original.
Now have 43amps instead of 28amps. Yellow Ute Very Happy Very Happy

Thanks John,

Is yours a Lucas or Bosch? and what model? I think the Lucas 17ACR is the usual choice

Personal preference for me is bosch, I have heard some people swear by lucas alternators while others swear at them, but the same could well be said of bosch stuff too

Cheers, Paul

This is my setup. The alt is a Sigma unit, which I think is easier than the Falcon Bosch unit because the casing has two mounting points for the adjustment lock bolt - allowing a shorter adjustment arm to be used. There also may be issues with fouling on the engine mount with the Falcon unit. The rear bracket is the Mini unit. I previously had a Lucas unit fitted, but the diodes failed.

The main issues I ran into were:
1/ Adjustment arm - I think I finished up using a Falcon one (XD/XE) - you need one with a bit of a hockey stick sort of shape. I think you'd need to modify one if you used a Falcon alt.

2/ I had to add a couple of washers to act as a spacer (where it pivots off the water pump) to line up the pulleys.

3/ Pivot bolt. Mine is less than ideal at the moment. To fit one long bolt from the front, the radiator needs to come out. The next time mine's out, I'll fit the bolt. Also (and I'm yet to test this theory,) I think this bolt should be little more than finger tight (with a nylock nut), because overtightening will tend to pull the alt out of alignment on the Mini bracket.

4/ The rear pivot mount (ie closest to the Mini bracket) on the alt has a weird carbon? steel spacer/bush in a rather large hole. I had to file this out to get any sort of bolt through it, but it's brittle and would break easily. I'd be inclined to make my own out of something more workable.

Hope this helps - S

The falcon alternator was for the dato motor, the sigma one looks good for the morrie engine.

Yellow Van As I am not at home at the moment I can not post any pics but I think for memory we used an alternator from a ford escort on the 1098 motor It has its own regulator. We used the front bracket from the morry generator and made our own rear bracket Regards Heather
