purists better look away now, all i can say is that you've been warned and I didnt start it. I picked her up as she was being given away and I have become fascinated with the roof chop that has beed done, the lines are so nice on it that I just cant help but want to get her on the road. there is a LOT of welding to do (roof is only tacked together) but it is just such a cool looking car. planning to keep her mechanically pretty stock and overall very 50s/60s period correct.

I would keep the roof toss the rest at that 1st prize car and find a 2 door to look at as far as the chop top goes...........................
BUT......................................
Before you go to much further check out the fact that they are straight cuts accross the A pillar !!!!!!!
Australian enginers like Z cuts on the A and B pillars for a start I belive.
Not sure what Vic main roads think , but the guy up here helping with the ute reconds they are wary of American top chops cuse of the straight cuts.
Just my 3 cents worth.

thanks, there is an engineer down the road from me so I will have a chat to him. unfortunately the rust in the 2 door is pretty substantial in the frame, and prop[ortionally I prefer the 4 door door length with the coupe roof, but I will have a chat to him about the pillars and the project in general and see what the response is.

Cheers
Ryan

time for some updates. I was a bit worried how the back of the car would work proportionally as it was hard to tell with all the missing metal, so I took a couple of pics and traced them...

I think I like Very Happy

I have had a bit of trouble finding an engineer willing to talk to me any time in the next couple of months, so I have had to think laterally and find ways to over engineer, as you will see in the next post. I have just finished 2nd year engineering, includign a fair bit on metals, so hopefully i have some idea.

ok, started making the chop right. firsat step was to cut some extra off 2 of the 3 layers of the front pillars.

then cut the inner piece out of the spare 2 door (this will need to be shortened at the top of course) currently set up with a couple of cm overlap at the bottom which looks almost factory. havent figured out the top yet.

The inner bit that goes around the doors I unpicked from the 2 door right back to the B pillar, so now there will be one piece right from the factory seam in the A pillar all the way back to the B pillar

still have to make a backing plate for the frotn outer join and the join at the B pillar but so far so good.

well its time for another update. I have carefully picked the side panel off the 2 door, test fitted it, trimmed most of one edge to make use of the extra reinforcement inside the 4 door arch and gotten the side panel to fit teh 4 door just about perfectly (see how nicely the spot weld lines line up)

This seemed like a good opportunity to re-test the roof and mock the panels into place to get a feel for what it will look like all together.

a couple of panelless rear views

here you can see how the panel will line up

getting a feel for the rear window proportions

and with panels hung roughly

first update in a while, both side panels have now been trimmed and mocked into place so I could get the roof into place for the first time. I still need to check the factory gap between the B pillars, but I think mine is still OK and I wont have to widen teh roof. the big challenge is going to be smoothing in the rear (tape and paper in place to get a feel for how difficult it will be). ]

I am not sure about 2 things at the moment,
*the alignment of the join at the bottom of the roof gutters - should the curve come down and meet the square window sill section? does it look OK where it is? other suggestions?
*is the hump in the rear of the roof wrong? does it look too large/obvious on the car?
OPINIONS APPRETIATED

anyway, onto the pics:

This shows the roof hump. too much?

This shows the gutter join I was talking about

My favourite photo at the moment

just got my new old rocker cover in the mail, old finned unit by Speed Equip Very Happy
have done a bit more work, lowered ther ear of the roof so that the rear rib aligns with the window sill, I think that has improved alot of the issues.

Keep up work.
I think I posted this on the site about 12 months ago,
as this is the car I always wanted to build but
I am sure will never happen.

The only differance to yours is that I would
lengthen the doors and purhaps would make
the windows framless, and put on a series two
cheeesgrater grill, with Series MM gauards,
but then have POP up head lights in the guards.
I've pulled down the profile of the roof like yours now,
and dropped the top of the window which I think look OK,
but still not happy with the top of the back deck,
it looks like it could come up a bit.

But I really think yours is starting to come together.

I've got the cheese grater on mine. with the rear end, I think it may be a matter of raising it slightly more and lessening the curve of it, smoothing it more, you can see in my last few pics I have cut and raised the rear join top near the bottom of the window, there is also a lot of 'tucking that needs to happen to the side/rear panels to make it work.

Check this link out that I found on the Canberra Morris Forum.

http://www.canberramorrisminors.org/gallery%20claydon%20kustoms.htm

Some great finished chop top projects. I haven't seen this forum before , so don't know if it's a new one or not.

I have been sleeping a bit lately.....but that's from being up at this hour of the morning on night shift.
