Hello, I posted this questiion on the Datsun 1200 website. I thought the answers may help some one else so here's the question and the link:

"My old alternator is not up to the job anymore and is running my battery down flat. It's only running at about 11 volts charge on the volt gauge.

I am wondering if there is an upgrade to another model alternator which is easy and inexpensive, with a greater capacity, or am I better of getting mine serviced, or maybe an exchange or new unit?"

http://datsun1200.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=31923&forum=1#190645

If anyone else has any ideas I would also be please to hear from you.

I fitted a 120A unit from a Range Rover to mine.
Changed the pulley over to suit the V belt & straight on. I'd hate to think what they're worth though.

Sigma alternators look like they might be an easy fit too.

Does yours have an internal regulator? If so, I'd see if a Bosch unit would fit. I'm not too familar with the layout on the Datsun engine, but the pics I've seen look like it might be ok.

They are as common as dirt - Falcons, Sigmas, Telstars/Lasers etc all used them. Outputs vary, but the Sigma casings are useful as they have two mounting points, which can make for neater fitting.

If it's external, you'll have a regulator box on the firewall or inner guard. It's usually about the size of a cigarette packet and will have a couple of wires attached.

If the alternator is an internally regulated type, it will often have a small black plastic cover on part of the rear. It would make sense to fit an internally regulated alt when doing an engine swap, I think yours probably would be one.

Hi Oli,

I am pretty sure it is not internally regulated as it is a 16AC, I am reasonably sure a 16ACR has the internal regulator. The heavy duty orange wire is the battery, and the yellow one is for the charge light

(one of you auto eleccies out there please correct me if this is wrong!!

Hope this helps, Cheers Paul

hi oli you do NOT have an internal regulator. it would look like a squarish plastic block in the back of the alternator with all the wires attached to it, some mini's and marina's have them
cheers

Oli, the fact that your alternator has an IND connection for the warning light on the alternator itself leads me to believe yours has an internal regulator.

Bosh & Lucus have the internal regulator bolted on the back where you can see it.
Early jap alternators Have the internal reg inside .

I always use XD-XF they are cheap (20bucks at swaps) aircondition models are big amps, (60-80amp) & a small mod to fit them.
No they don't just bolt on Very Happy
