Blue Van
Good morning everyone. I have just joined the forum and thought that you maybe interested in my morrie which I purchased in November 2007. This is my third morrie.

This is a 53-55 morrie panelvan with the following
1300cc Toyota
5 speed gear box
Datsun running gear
Disc breaks on front and drum on the back
14"wheels
Mazada 626 seats

I do not know how to insert the pictures here, so I have placed them in the pictures section under Kel's Morrie

Great web site... Wish this was here when I did the first two morries.

regards
Kel

Welcome Kel Very Happy .

Have a look here for posting photos on the forum:
http://www.morrisdownunder.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2103
You don't have to use Tinypic (or similar) as you have the photos in the gallery already. Just bring up a full size photo from the gallery, right click your mouse & select 'properties'. You'll get the URL from there & can proceed as per the above link.

Voila !!

Not too many Lowlight vans around .

Yes I agree, this is on the list of things to do. As are the back lights.
I have been looking at photos of other cars to see if anything catches me, but alas, nothing has yet.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Since this photo was taken, a front spoiler has been installed and I was thinking of installing the parkers and blinkers into the spoiler.

Good morning everyone,
Could someone advise if there is a legal requirement for the position of the blinkers / indicators and parking lights on the front of the morrie?

I would like to know the minimum height off the road and the distance from the side of the car into the blinkers / indicators and parking lights

I am in NSW.

I would like to embed the blinkers / indicators and parking lights into the front spoiler.

I would appreciate any help. Thanking you in advance.

Kel

not sure on teh legalities, but my thinking would be, as the car didnt legally have to have them at all, as long as you still have the trafficators working then the indicators are a bonus, and should be able to go wherever (within reason)

NSW
Try front indicators min 400mm - max 2000mm with 40 degree view front 80 degree side and parkers (pre 1991 - no height regulations ?) but normally 350mm minimum.

Hi Kel,

Not sure that its the state you'll have to worry about. I've been hassled for indicators on motorcycles in Vic and it was the ADR's they refered to here.

Have a trawl through the list. It was pretty specific on motorcycles ie height from the ground, distance between etc etc.

Because of the modified running gear, the blinkers have to be brought up to spec.

As Oracle said the side view is the important one, if they are only visable from the front then you have to have a small blinker in the gaurd as most moderns have.
If you put the parkers in the headlight, then you only need a small yellow blinker out near the corner of your spoiler.
If you don't want to move the parker you can have a white lense with parker & blinker in a double filiment globe, white front blinkers are legal in NSW.

Those gaurd blinkers of modern cars would look good in the front spoiler, bend up a piece of flat steel to the shape of you spioler then go to the wreckers & go over all the cars, try & pick a common model so they are easy to get later.

You might also get picked up on the headlight height.

The lowlight headlights are below the minimum height requirements. It's not a problem on a standard car (lowlight) but yours might be.
Hopefully it will go through un-noticed.

Yes Scott you maybe correct. However it has been past by an engineer who may not have thought to check the height of the lights and I wasn't going to mention it.

The morrie is on full NSW rego now with every modification passed.

Not that it is passed, I'm only enhancing the cosmetic side of the morrie.

Dressing up the front bumper bar come spoiler, hopefully will not cause any complications with the local law enforcements.

Hence the question on what is the correct position for the lights.

So far everything is correct. Very Happy I hope......

Regards
Kel

Dear All
As I have said in my past post, I would update you with pictures and description on the morrie van.
Over the last few months, we have modified the morrie van a little. We have done the following
1) Installed new LED lights on the back which include reversing lights.
2) Install a reversing camera.
3) Fully line the interior of the van, new side wall linings, and new matching cupboards at the back (for a jack and a wheel brace etc).
4) Installed rear floor carpet with a lift up section for hinged battery lid
5) Lined the two back doors.
6) Installed rubbers around the back two doors.
7) Install webbed straps to stop back doors coming open to far.
Red Ute Installed a spare wheel with cover.
9) Installed a sunroof.
10) Installed original sun visors but to match interior lining.
11) Installed two original door pulls but to match linings
12) Replaced wind up window rubbers on the front two doors.
13) Install new rubber sealing strip at the bottom or the two front doors.
14) Install new felt sealing strips in the front two wind up windows
15) Re install the correct bailey channel in the front wind up windows.
16) Installed a small glove box style shelf under dash.
17) Installed a new stereo system.
1Red Ute Installed a front spoiler with new blinkers and parkers embedded into the spoiler.
19) Installed driving lights embedded into the front spoiler.
20) Replace outside revision mirrors
21) Replace steering wheel with a sports wood grain wheel.

Things to do over then next 6 – 12 months…
1) Re-paint
2) Replace inside revision mirror (as the sun visors hit it.)
3) Redo front windscreen
4) Hook up the two speed wipers.

Over the last 6 months, I have been busy paying people to do work on the Morrie. Mad I spend way to much time overseas. Anyway....
here is an update.

Repainted the whole car.
Got the car detailer to put cosmetic stickers on the side of the car, back doors and the bonnet.
Replace both front windscreens including new rubbers and chrome center section.
With new chrome center section, I refitted a new revision mirror.
Replaced oil gauge and temperature gauge
Wiring was a mess (still is) but got a auto electrician to try and sort out the wires behind the dash.
Fitted side pipes with covers
Overall I'm pretty happy with the out come so far. I've spent way to much money on it, but I intend to keep this one whereas the past two, I sold on.

I will put more pictures up today under the pictures section.

What do you think ? Have I gone too far ??

Regards
Kel

Its been a while since my last up date, but I have been mucking around with some ideas.
Here are some later photos of what I’ve been doing lately.
I had the jelly bean mags, but had no centre hubs, so I decided to make my own.
[/img]

All four wheels on the morrie have them as well as the two wheels on the on the teardrop trailer

I machined the hubs out of 100 mm round aluminium bar and then created the motif on a cnc mill.

The next thing I have done is to install external revision mirrors. I have tried four different sets so far and am still not happy with the results. But I am getting there.
These are the latest ones with a good size mirror 160 mm x 100 mm. The bars are chromed and hand made. I am looking for some fancy stuff to make the bars stand out more , but have not been able to get it right as yet.

I will keep playing with the mirrors until they are to my liking.
Regards
Kel

Fantastic work Kel

Looking really good.

And i am very interested in the external mirrors. I am sure a lot of other van owners are too. Lack of rearward vision is a serious downside.

Cheers
Don

Don
The mirrors are size mirror 160 mm x 100 mm and from the door frame to the outer part of the mirror it is approximately 260 mm.

The van back, sticks out approxmately 90-100 mm past the door frame, so with the mirrors sticking out another 100 mm I can nearly see cars behind me if they are up close.

I bent the metal arms to an approximate shape and then I formed metal sheet around that to try and hide the 10mm arms. The shape is not the best, but its the best that I have come up with so far.

If you look at my small triangular shaped window, there is no chrome piece in the front lower corner like normal morries. So to overcome this, I cast two aluminium brackets which are screwed to the door. The metal arms are then screwed into this casting.

Hope this helps

Regards
Kel

Thanks for the info Kel

Yours is a much better solution than the truck-type mirrors that some use. The truck ones do the job, but they look terrible IMVHO.

Related to this discussion -- I reckon that a reversing camera is essential for these vans.

Cheers
Don

You are correct. I have the reversing camera which is great.

But the ability to see behind whilst moving forward was the idea.

They still need find tuning to get them right so any suggestions gladly accepted as long as there is no copy right involved Very Happy

Agreed. The two (mirrors and camera) serve different purposes, both very important.

Do you have any vibration problems with the mirrors?

Yes and that is one of the problems sticking them out so far.

Of course the morrie suspension doesn't help nor the pot holed roads but that is part of the fun.
