Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
G’day

At 1058 this morning I started my Morris project, I bought a car on eBay.
I had a look at the car on Boxing Day so new what I was bidding for.
It is a Blue 1959 2 door.
It has been painted close to original colour, most of the interior has been re done and the engine number matches, it has an alternator and Morris Elite? Rims with 175 75 14 tyres, so it is close to what Mr Morris intended all those years ago.

Now the work begins to turn it into my vision of a Morris Minor in the 21st century.

Great start Graham, you will gets lots of help from this site. Yellow Sedan
On the subjet of Major Wheels .
Late Major Elite had saftey rims, the "lip" can be seen and felt around the edge.
All major rims are 100mm (4inch) as apposed to Minor at 75mm (3inch)
if yours do not have the saftey lip make sure they have tubes. Yellow Ute Yellow Convertible

G’day

What I am exploring is fitting a 13B or 12A mazda rotary with an auto, depends what I can get approved.
Then the usual breaks, diff, wheels, tires, suspension, seats , air conditioning etc.
Going to see if RX7 stuff will or can be made to fit.
Try and keep it just 2 makes, a Morris Minor Mazda.

G’day

We have progress the car now has full Victorian registration (I am in Vic for a couple of months so I figured I might as well get it registered and use it). Very Happy Very Happy
I spoke to the local rotary expert about the engine transplant and he is talking to the engineer he uses to see what would be involved in getting a 12A and a 13B approved.
We will then work out what is the best/cost affective solution.
He seems to think that 100kw from a 12A is quite easy without making it lumpy or noisy; a 13B of course would be 20 or 30kw more.
The 12A would give 7.5kg / kw which is not too bad; my old series 5 RX7 turbo had 10kg / kw.
It will be interesting to see what the engineer comes up with.

Progress a small step forward, the engineer has given in principal approval for the 13B. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
As long as it is installed properly (as if you wouldn’t) and we use the standard computer and emission controls. Now the hunt is on for a suitable motor etc.

6Port motor off a Series 4/5 mazda, would be a good choice.

Or, if you have deep pockets, a RX8 Renesis motor. Yellow Convertible

That is my thought adequate power at a reasonable price; probably look at a front cut as it has all the bits we will need engine, computer wiring etc. I will be guided by Chris Dalton of Dalton Automotive (the local rotary wiz.) as he has done all this before, although not on a Morry.
I had a look at the RX8 figures and figured 141kw and 220 Nm of torque with the 6 speed auto would be nice but probably not at the price.

Or, if you don't want the hassle of EFI, then a 13B out of a series 3 RX7 would be the next best option, and less emssions crap as well. Also fueling won't need to be revised, as you wouldn't have to make allowances for Surge tanks, and lift pumps. And power wise they are just as good.

The electronics of the series 4/5 engines are highly complicated, and the stock computer can be very finicky as well. Thats why a lot of people change them for a microtech/aftermarket ecu as soon as possible.

There are plus and minus which ever way I go with the engine. My theory is that EFI is better and the standard computer dose its job on standard motors (I certainly had no problems with my 3 RX7) and as the motor will remain standard, maybe some port cleaning, it will do the job nicely. I will see what the experts have to say and what I can get for my money, it should be interesting.

G’day

We have found a suitable motor; Aust. Delivered NA series 5 pranged from the back so motor and wiring harness are good. It is a manual so auto and computer are coming from another source. With a bit of luck engine and transmission will be ready to fit in car in 2 or 3 weeks. Very Happy

For Graham when he comes back, this is a peek at the 12A in my van.

Note that the starter motor is almost as big as the actual motor.

Fits easily, doesn't it. The gearbox is a much tighter squeeze.

I can put up more pix if anyone wants to see.

Cheers

Hi Trev

The van needs a respray. I want to pull it apart to do a proper job. So the engine installation will have to wait for a while.

I was intending to put an A15 in--I have already bought it--but Grahams project is making me think again about staying with the rotary. I really like rotaries, having had a few Mazda rotors in the past. Graham is pushing me along. He even found a rotary expert here in Wagga who might be able to help--I didn't think there were any.

We'll see.

Cheers

G’day Don
I put the pic of your engine on AusRotary and asked for info on what it might be.
This is what I have so far:

judging from what I can see, that is water pump, starter location and dizzy, it looks to me like it is an early (73 or earlier) twin dizzy, from an RX-2 going by the top starter and where the engine mounts are bolted on.

but it has had fitted a later model single dizzy front cover and S2/3 RX-7 electronic distributor. also used the later crank pulley. (make sure the belt will line up, I did the front cover/elec. dizzy on mine but kept the early pulley so dont know if it will work properly)

if I like Rotors so much, why do I drive a V8 Hilux?
AusRotary powered since 2002

I think the early RX2 claimed about 130 hp, but not sure how they calculated it at that time.
Wheather they were real horses or Japanese ponies.
Either way reasonable power for a Morry .

cheers

G’day

Finally Morry has left home for the transplant.
We actually have all the major bits required, the engine is a NA 6 port injected from a series 4 RX7 rebuilt with new bearings etc. with some porting to enhance torque, the gearbox is a 4 speed auto from a NA series 5 RX7 as is the wiring harness, computer, tail shaft and a few other bits. The diff is from a series 2 RX7 and will be modified to fit, it has a 3.9 centre and solid disc breaks.
The combination of 3.9 dif and the overdrive gearbox will give about 40kph per 1000 in top gear, depending on the size of wheel and tyre.
I am thinking 15 x 6 wheels with 185 65 15 tyres (that would give about 42kph/1000) but wider on the back would probably be better if they fitted.

Now all I have to do is be patient while things happen, strange how everything seems to take at leased twice as long as you had thought.

Cheers

G’day

We actually do have some progress this time, it is embarrassing looking back at the optimism in my earlier posts, I think if I replaced weeks with months they might be closer to reality.

The old engine is out and the new one is almost ready to go in.
Tomorrow is the moment of truth, going to trial fit a dummy engine and gearbox, it will fit just depends on how far forward it has to be to clear the dreaded rack.
Bring on tomorrow.

Cheers

BTW It looks like the car has a name, a friend started calling it MORRX which I think will stick.
