if you look closely you can see some knurling on the rounded end of the speedo cable
try turning it from here
(the cable screws into the brass nut, which can stay in the gearbox)

Brilliant advice tortron - many thanks - we'll give it a try tonight!
Another question - does anyone recognise whether this is indeed a 1000 gearbox? Our lowlight has a 948 engine.
We had assumed because of the location of the gearstick that it was a 1000 gearbox. Is this the right assumption?
Btw, we're going to be blogging shortly about what we're up to on the car. but here's a short summary.
At the moment our progress is halted because the clutch seems to be seized. It will not engage at all. We are going to therefore remove the gearbox and see whether the clutch or pressure plate has corroded on.
Does this sound like the right approach?
Then once we know whether we need parts for the gearbox/clutch, we are going to place a large order for new parts from the UK including cosmetic stuff, heaps of brake bits and window and door rubbers.
Hopefully then we can get the car road-worthy, if not particularly presentable. Once its mechanically sorted, we then plan to pull it all apart again to give it a back to metal respray to make it pretty.
Any advice would be muchly appreciated - its all about learning - this Morris Minor project!
Cheers!
Joel & Gavin

It looks like the 948cc gearbox.

having mates with hillman hunters i can tell you that a great way to free up a stuck clutch is to start it in gear.
use higher and higher gears until it breaks free
- Make sure you wont lurch through the garage wall or anything while doing this
