ignition short circuit

The power went out when I pulled the starter, i heard a click like a blown fuse sound but the fuses are good, well the 3 fuses i could find, maybe theres more?
This happened while i was disconnecting headlights and tail lights at the wiring connectors and the loose ends lay there possibly touching each other or the bodywork and shorting but not that i could see. I also disconnected the trafficators/semaphores and their original wiring but those wires were severed from the loom a long time ago so shouldnt effect it.
I'm not very good with electrics but I do methodically record & document all the wires and pins configurations so it all goes back the same way, but i tried to start it before putting it back together so unsure if system was earthed etc, so if its not a fuse & not a temporary short is it a blown ignition do you reckon?
its a Series 2 '54 mostly original except has blinker mod.

I will just about put my money on the pull starter being kaput, take the terminal that comes from the battery and undo it on the pull starter, now touch it on the other terminal (make sure your out of gear) your morry should spring into life. Its a very common problem and I replaced mine last year, MM World had one to me overnight an it was quite cheap, about $80 including airfreight

No I havent but thanks grant n frosty, I didnt want to start eyes rolling out there but it started ok next time I tried but then I couldnt turn it off. Yep idilling away after key turned to off, key out and in pocket, battery disconnected etc.until dizzy cap unclipped.
So no I havent got the new pull starter or done the test. I got into rust repairs instead.
Do you think its a new problem or replacing starter will fix both symptoms?

sounds like a ignition switch problem, if you turn the key off and it still runs then its still getting power thru the switch, if you reconnect the battery does the gen light com on even with the key out ?

Yes gen light on and fuel pump ticks away witbout key.

remove the ign switch and disconnect the wires, if the gen light still stays on then you have a short in the wiring loom, if it doesn't then its the ign switch that's faulty

Will do, thanks zabond, switch is out & looks ok on outside but its the inside that worries me. Battery is on a charger until tomorrow before I can test it all again.
Ignore the deja vu post above, must have been me trying to read this liitle lcd screen outside in full sun with fat fingers. *fixed by mod

I still havent been back to the car yet, not tried to isolate the switch yet, but thinking about it I'm getting curious what can go wrong with the old switch? besides old age the only other thing was i sprayed rust converter and WD40 in the area right before the short.

what type of rust converter did you use? if you sprayed it into the ign switch you may find that has created a short as it may be an electricity conductor,some converters leave a residue coating which can cause a short

when checking the main fuses did you put them back in their proper place?
as they can be located closer together and this bypasses the ign switch

Ok finally got to take out ign switch and gen light stays on zabond, even with the switch wires unscrewed. So that confirms it thnx.
Bigcarle, you might be right as well, the 2 fuses will not sit in their craddles together anymore and one tries to pop out like its too fat, maybe the spring holders are touching each other? I replaced a burnt fuse recently there and did not know there were different sizes ie diameters so one or both could be too large is what I think you are saying.
The rust converter was a red sticky liquid with next to no info on the bottle except something about tree sap.
Let me know if any of this is sounds right.
