Wiper motor problem

I have a 1959 4 door with a 1400 Datsun motor & gearbox
i have just completed a 2 year nut and bolts rebuild & respray
The problem l am having when l decided to check the wipers
They only go halfway across the windscreen or halfway through the sweep
If you turn the switch off they stop in the right place
But if you turn the ignition switch of when the wipers are in the middle of the screen you can gently movie them across the remainder of the sweep when you turn the ignition switch back on they go back to half sweep.
When l painted the old girl l undid the wheel boxes l think that's what you call them and pushed them inside the dash when l reassemble them l noticed the passenger side wheelbox was very loose when I reassemble it l May have turned it a round on the shaft once could this be the problem. If not any ideas would be appreciated .

I do have a 2 speed wipers system out of a Morris Major Will they fit

I had some problems with my single speed wipers would not get a full sweep took one arm off wet the screen worked ok. Next I checked the voltage at the motor running and found 11 volts, diagram will show earth/neg wire which is switched also does fuel gauge ad more. My fix was to fit a relay connected to good clean metal earth and have the switch wire control relay . Result was an increase to 12.5 volts motor running and two wipers sweeping well.

Hi John Ballard.
That maby the problem l have no way testing the volts but both wiper motors were working correctly the spare one came off a 1961 to was working fine the one from the 1959 that I am restoring worked fine before the restoration only played up after l reinstall it .
I would like to try a relay l have a couple lying around, but l am not sure how to fit one.
If you could please put up a diagram that would be appreciated.

Hi try this, disconnect the cable from the wiper motor, push cable to the full sweep position, place cable back into the wiper motor and mark the centre of the hole on the side off the housing, move gear wheel in wiper motor and try and put the connecting bar in the two, reason, there are three different length bars, each will change the sweep.

Firstly can I suggest you acquire a multimeter about $20 on line or places Like Jaycar etc.
I fitted my relay under dash and from there connected a cable to good paint free metal from terminal 30 . You then connect the wire from the switch to terminal 85 ( disconnect from wiper should be green/black) run cable from wiper empty terminal to 87. positive power to wiper is always on with ignition switch you need to splice a cable on here to terminal 86. (plain green cable.)

How it works switch on gives circuit through relay coil 85/86 which pulls relay in motor gets a earth/negative through relay to clean earth on body.

Hi John Ballard.
Sorry for the late reply but I broke 2 toes haven't been able to do much l hobbled out to my shed and fitted a relay got about a third moor sweep. Still not perfect but not bad hopping Mr roadwearth man will be happy with that.
