Hi all,

My names Sam, new to the forum Very Happy
I've owned my lil pickup for a while now... I'm slowly doing her up, time permitting.

Originally I bought it with a Datsun 1200 motor and 5 speed in it. In the last few months I've been busy putting in a rebuilt A14 and 3 speed auto..

Here's some pics:

Way back when, before it was 'officially' mine ---

I changed the wheels to some steelies with whitewalls, lowered it (a bit too much I might add Embarassed) and fixed a few bits and pieces ---

As I mentioned I'm putting the rebuilt A14 and auto in place of the tired 1200 engine, this gives you an idea where I'm at ---

A14 ready for rebuild ---

Old A12 ready to come out ---

Witchcraft happens and in goes the new A14 Very Happy ---

Mounted the new radiator ---

Also picked up a nice new electronic distributor for it ---

...and hogged out the inlet manifold and adaptor for the 32/36 Weber ---

That's pretty much where I'm at right now.
I've lost two of the bolts that hold the torque converter onto the flex plate so I'm waiting for those to arrive in the mail... I need to hook up the electric fuel pump, run some fuel lines, etc and then it should be ready to fire up for the first time! Very Happy

I also have a 56A dogleg 5 speed up for grabs if anyone's interested?

Hi Sam and welcome to our community. That distributor looks good. Are they easy to come by and are you able to let us know where we may be able to purchase one.

I have just about finished my morrie. Go to the MY MORRIE section then click on LIBBORS MORRY , NEARLY READY FOR THE ROAD. You will find some pretty inspiring pictures there

Cheers

Darren

Thanks mate, glad to be a part of it Very Happy Looong time Morris fan, owned a few minis, 1100's, etc.

Regards the dizzy, I purchased it off a member from the Datsun 1200 forum named Mal (Weekend1000)
I'm not sure how many he has, but he seems to have a few. They're an aftermarket replacement for the Nissan item. $170 might sound a bit pricey but I figured once I bought an electronic module and new vac advance for it it wasnt much more for an entirely new distributor Very Happy

Weber still needs a clean up but thought I'd show the size difference between the standard Hitachi and the DGV ---

@Robbo: Thanks mate, much appreciated : )
@Oliver: Thanks mate, hows your lil morry go with the auto? I'm very eager to see how the auto will go behind the A14...

It's slowly getting there! It desperately needs a paint job, so that's on the ever-growing list along with a new diff, bench seat... I've also got plans to put a nice wooden tray on the back with some matching sides. Just taking one thing at a time : )

Also, thought I'd mention that the original wheels that were on the ute are up for grabs. Again, make me an offer, they're just sitting here taking up space and I won't be using them again.

Latest update.. I've finished running new 5/16" fuel line and an electric fuel pump for the weber. Just waiting on the fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter to arrive to plumb them in.

Also purchased a new 9" air filter ---

Wow, I can't believe how long its been since I've updated the build. A lots been going on.
To summarise:

. Finally got it on the road
. Got it tuned but the tuner had some issues with the ignition timing. He couldn't get the static ignition timing any further than 5* retarded or it would ping.. even though it's supposed to be 5* advanced from the factory.
. Turned out after playing with it myself that the advance curve was wayyy out.
. Spent a day playing with the springs and weights to try and get the curve somewhere close. Without any diagnostics I think I've managed to get a reasonable curve, static timings properly set to 5* advanced. Only thing is, it pre-ignites only when you're WOT and at high rpm. Vortex 98 solved the problem so far, but I think the fueling's not right now that I have sorted the ignition timing. I know Webers generally use fuel but I'm only getting 250kms max to 30L. Does anyone have a simliar setup to reference that off? I'm not too keen to spend another $300 to get it re-tuned... :-/
. Just recently the engine developed a really rough idle, turned out the modulators diaphragm on the auto was stuffed, replaced it and idles sweet again
. Made a new wood tray for the rear, came up fantastic in my opinion
. Installed all new poly bushes in the front end, a little heavier oil in the dampers and modified the height to sit somewhere nice in between lowww and decent clearance/comfort.
. Purchased a H150 Sunny diff and am in the process of fitting.

I'm now onto 'Stage 2' of things I want to do the morry
The list includes (in rough order):

. Finish diff installation.
. Adapting the Volvo discs and 4-pot callipers I have here to the Morry uprights with custom stub axles (More on this later)
. New wheels.
. Megasquirt crank fired ignition.. and fuel injection not long after. I'm sick of dealing with carbies
. Fitting telescopic shockies to the front instead of the Armstrongs.
. Paint job.

Most updates have been mechanical, but heres a few pics ---
(I need to take some more recent ones)

New tray, this was after the first coat:

New diff awaiting mounts:

Mate the tray looks great, & i also prefer wide steelies over alloy mags on a morrie (and early holdens)

looks beautiful! love the wooden backing and rims!

are they true whitewalls or portwalls? they look HOT!

where did you track your a14 down from? did you do the rebuild yourself?

Thanks

The wheels are 13" Moke wheels atm... not really the right offset I'm after.
Once I get the diff sorted I'll be changing to 14" steelies all round with a nice negative offset on the rear

The whitewalls are portawalls at the moment, they're starting to get a little rough around the edges and I'm not entirely happy with the fit, but they give the intended look. When I change to 14's I'll be running proper whitewall tyres.
I sourced the A14 through the Datsun 1200 forum, just posted a wanted add and it wasn't too long And yes, I rebuilt it all, head to toe in my spare time.. which is probably why it took so long

The best whitewalls are the Diamondback range from John Cain in Newcastle
This is the USA web site http://www.dbtires.com/index.html
John Cain is the Aussie distributer.

Just keep the Ute registered as it will be hard to get it engineered with different wheels.

Thanks for the tip Bruce. I'll have to get onto them and find the right set.

So today I pulled the Morris diff out and got the brackets on and the Nissan diff in place ready to set the pinion angle and tack the mounts tomorrow.
Morris diff vs. Nissan diff ---

I've been wanting to soften up the rear suspension as it's quite harsh going over any large bumps. Here's a pic of my springs ---

From memory, aren't pick ups/travellers/vans, etc all supposed to have 7 leaves and sedans 5? If my eyes aren't playing tricks I count 9... which leaves can I take out to soften it up?

I have used Main, second and third from the Ute pack and replaced the rest with a sedan pack, ride is better than the Ute but still able to carry some weight.

Ok, thats what I'm after. So is that the top three from the ute pack and the bottom 2 of a sedan pack?

I have 6 leaves, so 3 Ute and 3 sedan, Libbor has the same and they handle the power and weight well.

My first regoed morry, (just bought a house young kids & broke) i sort of borrowed 4 light truck tyres off my company work van Very Happy
They were 14inch light trucks on new 5.5 X14 steelies, matt black with caps & chrome dress rims, with it lowered slightly it looked pretty mean Very Happy
i took it for it's rego inspection & it passed no prob, a few weeks later i lent them to a mate sid to get his passed, he just ended up going to the same inspector Shocked the bloke asked him with a cheeky smile, did they have a special on those wheels this week
Then a few months later Tom came knocking, "can i borrow......." Very Happy
