Sounds like you have a wire connected the wrong way.
+ or - Earth ?

hi frosty, it is -earth i done this many of times all wires are on correct the wires i only touch was the wires off the alternator.

for the wire to do that you definitely have a short straight to gnd, are you missing and insulating washer on the wire, or is there metal connector touching the body of the alternator. the wire from the alternator to starter shouldn't be live all the time either
