Andrew go to Repco and buy a facet pump, it needs to be mounted down by the tank, as it is a push pump, on some good rubber mounts, you can leave your old pump in place, it will pump through it, and your car will look stock still, pm me if you want details of how to do it

Hi Andrew,

I had the setup Grant describes and it worked well. The only thing is if you are a purist, the ticking sound comes from the back of the car, not front.......

Hope this is of some use, Paul

And i checked the fuel filters

Might be worth checking or advancing it a bit, I had this problem after new points plugs etc and advancing or retarding it a bit solved it.
I think I had to advance it quite a bit actually.

The advance would certainly be my first check, as points plugs etc were changed it is very easy to move a distributor unwittingly, it is so easy to test the advance and then at least you can rule that out before you start pulling down a carby or two.

i'm at burpengary. I could pop up in the next day or so if you like. I've mucked about with motors a bit. from side valves to rotaries. plugs points and carbies I can deal with. not real good with computerised sensors etc. no expert but I have learned stuff. I'll await your reply.

When you replaced the plugs were they all the same colour as in same carbon buildup or were two dry 2 wet ect,if it was running fine prior to fuel pump failure,it should run ok after new pump fitted as it would be unusual for fuel pump/points/plug failure to all happen at once,it appears to be a fuel problem, later SU's have a small spring loade pin under the piston housing[not sure about early SU's] that you can lift the piston up which should increase the RPM as Grant said,if only one carb increases revs then the other has a blockage, the other variable is the fuel, you may have water or crap in it,if you take the aircleaner off and watch the pistons rise as you increase the revs they should both lift the same height I have seen a twin set up where the joining linkage between the carbs has become loose and only one carb actually working

Here's my tuppenece worth. From what you have said, I assume that you have added the new pump so that you are pumping the fuel through the old pump, which I once again assume is an original Lucas. These pumps have an inbuilt filter which can clog up and reduce fuel flow dramatically. Undo the hexagon nut at the bottom of the pump and the filter is under this. If blocked, give it a good cleanout. If its not, well just keep looking.
Good luck. I am putting my money on a fuel problem rather than an ignition problem.

Boeing Bob.

It was petrol problems. Sticky pistons in the carbies, particular the rear one and a blocked float jet in the rear carbie float bowl causing very little or no petrol to the rear two cylinders.

Andrew.

After speaking to the mechanic at work it appears that the rear carby piston MAY be sticking due to the needle seat not being centralised. Apparently this can occur.
The mechanic said to undo the locknut (brass nut under the carby) this will allow the seat to move and be centralised. Slide the piston up and down to centralise the seat. Tighten the locknut

The piston should drop right down to bottom when released. (As the piston in the front carby does.)
When tightening the locknut make sure the piston is right down. Ie the needle is in the seat and the piston moved up and down freely.

That’s what they said.

Laurie.

Your manual explains this I believe.

Let me kow If I can again help.

laurie.

well i went for a drive in my car today after a little playing with the carbs - i changed the top on the two of my float chambers as the rear one would not fill with fuel all the time - and alas the problem still exists - she drives fine but as soon as the rear float chamber does not get enough fuel she stalls untill it refills and then fine again
