I'm not sure if I have a problem with my starter or ring gear or possibly even the clutch, the last couple of days when I pull the starter I get nothing, I then rock the car and away the starter goes, and while hot I will have no further problems until the car sits till cold, today I removed and inspected the starter which worked out of the gearbox every time, and checked the ring gear which all looked ok from what I can see through the starter hole. The starter was refurbished only 6mths ago. has anyone else experienced this before, I'm wondering if the clutch is sticking and causing the starter to load up possibly, any suggestions appreciated

Sounds familiar:

I doub't it would be in the clutch. Starting in neutral with the clutch engaged would eliminate that.
If the starter operates after just rocking the car, I'd say the pinion gear is stuck in mesh with the ring gear.

If the suggestions offered previously didn't work, then I'd be just replacing the starter motor with a known "good" unit. You must have one or two lying around.
Maybe Redback can drop one over on their next trip Very Happy .

With the carbon release bearing, this can cause extra drag but not enough to cause the starter motor to fail.

It might be as easy as the starter needs lubricating, if it was rebushed it could be a bit tight when hot, give it a good clean & a dose of oil, Is the ring-gear ok all the way around, the morrie chews out about a quarter of the ring-gear in the one place.
